Report: Fiat says it has "no plans" to take Mazda stake

Fiat Badge

Fiat Chairman John Elkann says his company has no plans to purchase a stake in Mazda, according to Reuters. Instead, the Italian automaker will focus its efforts on increasing its share of Chrysler to more than 60 percent. Right now, Fiat owns 58.5 percent of Chrysler, though the European company has made it clear that at some point in the future, it would like that figure to be closer to 100 percent.

Fiat and Mazda recently announced a plan to partner on the development of a new convertible sports car platform that will serve as the basis for both the next-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata and a new Alfa Romeo model. That partnership led analysts to speculate on a potential investment deal between Mazda and Chrysler. Both companies have dismissed the notion.

Even so, it's worth pointing out that Fiat has no interest in investing in Mazda right now. The company has its hands full with the European economic crisis and nursing Chrysler back to health, but there's nothing saying that once those two issues cool down Fiat wouldn't revisit the idea of a Japanese partner if the roadster partnership goes smoothly. Mazda could certainly use the cash, and we're betting that Fiat wouldn't mind injecting a bit of the Japanese automaker's dynamic prowess and Skyactiv knowhow into its products.

Loeb set for Acropolis victory

Sebastien Loeb is now cruising towards Acropolis Rally victory following Petter Solberg's retirement. A big battle between the top two had been expected on the final day in Greece after Solberg's Ford closed to within 10 seconds of Loeb's Citroen on Saturday afternoon. Vettel pins hopes on race strategy

Sebastian Vettel reckons anything is possible in Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix and remains positive that his strategy of starting on the soft compound option tyre could play into his hands during the race. Last year's winner from pole, Vettel gave up on his qualifying attempt in Q3 in order to save his tyres, and will start from ninth on the grid after Pastor Maldonado takes his 10-place grid penalty. But while the world champion accepted that starting mid-pack made his race more challenging, he suggested that being able to run longer on his first stint than all those that qualified on supersoft tyres could play into his hands in terms of track position.

Report: And Then There Were 76: Aston Martin One-77 wrecked in Hong Kong

Crashed Aston Martin One-77

It was only a matter of time before we heard word of a deceased Aston Martin One-77. Reports kicking around the web suggest the owner of one of the 700-horsepower supercars got just a bit too close to a curb at a high rate of speed in Hong Kong, sending ultra-rare bodywork scattering across the landscape. Details are scarce at the moment, but reports suggest the owner is from mainland China and the accident only involved the Aston Martin. Even so, reports suggest the car looks as if it was being driven without license plates, which may mean the owner was operating the One-77 without insurance or registration (or simply that the plates were removed after the crash to avoid embarrassment).

Given the supercar's carbon fiber chassis and the significant amount of damage on hand, this One-77 could be the first to head to the scrap pile, but we suspect someone with really deep pockets will revive it, even if it's not the owner. The machine is currently headed back to Aston Martin headquarters for evaluation.

Ferrari ‘can fight for pole’ in Monaco

Ferrari could be a contender for pole position in Monaco because the characteristics of the circuit play into the strengths of the F2012, according to technical boss Pat Fry. Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso set the third and fourth fastest times of the opening day of practice in Monaco and although Fry believes that it will be a close battle at the front, he is hopeful that the slow circuit will help his drivers. "Here is a little bit of a different track," said Fry.

Bird tops Monaco FR3.5 practice

Sam Bird led the way in an eventful Formula Renault 3.5 free practice session around the streets of Monaco. The Briton, who took pole position in the Principality in GP2 last year, had a couple of stints at the top of the times as the session went into its closing stages. On both occasions ISR driver Bird deposed Alexander Rossi from top spot, and the Arden Caterham driver was unable to respond after he crashed at Casino Square towards the end of the session.

Video: Chris Harris explains what makes his own 1986 BMW M5 so special

The 70s were a definitive decade for music and movies. Fashion and cars, not so much. The 80s corrected one of those oversights, an era of ethereal supercars like the Porsche 959, game-changing exotics like the Ferrari Testarossa, and, best of all, everday cannons that offered mortals a generous portion of lairy thrills, such as Chris Harris' 1986 e28 BMW M5.

In 1986, a 3,100-pound, 286-horsepower luxury sedan straight from the factory that could also handle was as rare as a goose with lips. Sure, there was a more powerful AMG Mercedes-Benz E-Class but it didn't want to get into a lengthy conversation about handling, and there was the AMG Hammer, but that was a terrifically expensive tuner special. The M5 weighed the same as the 1986 Chevrolet Corvette and had 225-section rear tires just like the 'Vette, but the M5 had 36 more horsepower. And it had four, leather-covered seats. And it could corner.

All of which has to do with why Drive's Chris Harris spends eight minutes explaining, and showing, why he loves his personal M5 so much. Scroll down to learn about the sedan that compels him to say "it's the best money I've ever spent on a car."

Perez: Crash won’t hold me back

Sergio Perez is certain that the memory of his crash at the chicane during qualifying for last year's Monaco Grand Prix will not hold him back this year. The Mexican suffered a concussion when he hit the barrier and was forced to miss both the race and the Canadian Grand Prix because of the after-effects. But while he expects it to be tough when he returns to the scene of the accident at speed for the first time today during morning practice, he does not expect it to make any difference

Tech 3 pair upbeat despite crashes

Tech 3 Yamaha's Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow said the fact they were both running well and challenging for a podium finish at Le Mans provided some form of consolation following their crashes. As has been the case for much of the season the pair proved almost inseparable, locked in battle not only with each other but also with Ducati's Valentino Rossi and Honda's Casey Stoner during an early four-way fight for second. As the race progressed both found it harder to stay with Rossi however, and in trying to stick on the Italian's tail both fell - Crutchlow 10 laps from the finish and Dovizioso seven laps later

Huff holds off Muller in race one

Rob Huff soaked up constant pressure from works Chevrolet team-mate Yvan Muller at the Salzburgring to score his second victory of the season, and the 20th win of his World Touring Car Championship career. Benefiting from a 10-12km/h slipstream, Muller edged marginally ahead of Huff on a number of occasions into the long, right-hand, Turn 9. The triple world champion was handed a strong opportunity of taking the lead when Huff made a small mistake at the preceding chicane, but despite a short trip through the gravel, Huff maintained momentum to cover his inside lines at Turns 9, 10 and 11 and retain the lead.
