Official: Audi R8 E-Tron laps 'Ring in record-setting 8:09, celebrates silently

Audi R8 E-tron at Nurburgring in front of record lap time billboard

Two months ago, the Audi R8 E-Tron was caught at the Nürburgring, getting its gumption up for what everyone has come to consider The Obligatory Timed Lap of Destiny. The lap has been completed with Markus Winkelhock at the wheel, and the result is a world record for a series production electric car: eight minutes and 9.099 seconds. If you believe in Wikipedia's list of 'Ring lap times, that puts the R8 E-Tron with its 375 horsepower and stupefying torque 25 seconds behind the R8 V10, five seconds adrift of the eight-cylinder R8, and in the same company as the Audi RS4 and previous generation BMW M6.

If we ignore the fact that you can't buy an R8 E-Tron yet, the hot lap car "corresponds in every detail" to the one you will be able to buy at the end of this year. Well, not exactly: customer cars will be speed-limited to 200 kph (125 mph), but for the 'Ring run, the limiter was raised to 250 kph. More practical numbers for civilian jaunts are the 0-to-62 mph time of 4.6 seconds and a 134-mile range when fully charged.

More important to all of us will be the video footage of its triumph, which we hope to see very soon. In the meantime, there's the obligatory press release of destiny below.

You Can Drive a Truck Through the Gaps in City’s Refusal to Remove Sheridan

The city told advocates that if the Sheridan Expressway is taken down, truckers heading to the Hunts Point market will end up on local streets instead of taking the Major Deegan, because of this difficult merge from the George Washington Bridge. McLaren bullish after record pitstop

McLaren has no doubts it is on the right path with its pitstop performances in 2012, even though a problem in the Valencia pits overshadowed the team's delivery of the fastest Formula 1 pitstop in history earlier in the day. After much focus on the team's performances in the pits this year, the McLaren pit crew completed a 2.6-second stop at Lewis Hamilton's first stop in Valencia to set a new benchmark in F1. However, that achievement was followed shortly afterwards by Hamilton losing time at his second stop when the front jack failed after its release mechanism was triggered by the car hitting it

Official: Tauro puts Spanish flavor, Corvette engine into Pontiac Solstice

Tauro Sport Auto V8 Spider - red - front three-quarter view, top-down

While it may have had its fans, we have to say we don't much miss the roadster family which General Motors based on its Kappa platform. Sold alternately as the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky, Opel GT and Daewoo G2X (depending largely on the market), the roadster as much about style as substance, and it was summarily discontinued in 2009 as GM's domestic brands faltered. But now a company in Spain has given the two-seat roadster a new lease on life.

That company is called Tauro Sport Auto, and its version - called, simply enough, the V8 Spider - is a fairly comprehensive rework. As you might have discerned from the name, it replaces the four-cylinder engine with a V8 also from the GM parts bin: the 6.2-liter LS3 Corvette engine, which it offers in 440, 480 and bonkers 650 horsepower states of tune with the addition of new cylinder heads and a supercharger.

How the chassis is able to handle that much power is another matter, but the interior unfortunately appears to carry over largely unchanged from the Pontiac. Pricing, though, starts at a very un-Solstice-like €100,000, or about $125k at today's rates. Which strikes us as about right for a Latin-flavored eight-cylinder roadster, but a tad much for a Kappa convertible.

Official: Ford SVT Raptor gets beadlock wheels, HIDs for 2013

2013 Ford SVT Raptor pickup rock crawling - front three-quarter view

In addition to the standard and new Limited models, Ford's freshening of the 2013 F-150 has extended to the no-job-too-big SVT Raptor, as well. Look closely and you'll see the new (optional) high-intensity discharge headlamps, the special beadlock wheels available through Ford Racing and the brand-new exterior color, called Terrain. (No, not that Terrain.)

About those wheels: Ford Racing will offer a beadlock ring kit as an option to SVT Raptor buyers. For serious off-roaders, this type of wheel is immensely helpful when the going gets rough. As Ford puts it:

Beadlock wheels secure the edges of a tire to the wheel between two surfaces so the tire is unlikely to roll off the rim if it's aired down to very low pressure, providing extra grip on the trail.

The Raptor's interior gets a slight tweak for 2013, as well, with the addition of a 4.2-inch multifunction LCD screen in the instrument cluster that's paired with the automaker's MyFord Touch infotainment system, still housed in the eight-inch screen on the center console. The powertrain has remained the same, but that's just fine - we're perfectly happy with the 6.2-liter V8, pumping out 411 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque.

Scroll down for the full details in the press blast.

Di Resta rues strategy choice

Paul di Resta believes that Force India "missed a trick" by persevering with his one-stop strategy in the European Grand Prix. The Scot finished seventh after stopping just once, but suspects that had he adopted a similar strategy to both Mark Webber and Michael Schumacher, who stopped on lap 38 and 41 respectively, he could have finished more strongly. "I think the result says it all, we clearly missed a trick," he said when asked by AUTOSPORT about how his strategy worked out.

“Every day of your life,” says the old trope, “you’re the oldest you’ve ever been.” It seems that every car Bentley launches is the fastest, quickest, or most powerful vehicle the company has ever made. Perhaps we shouldn’t be wowed by Bentley’s claim that the new Continental GT Speed is its fastest production model ever. [...]

2013 Nissan Altima: The Proposal

Paris, Hawaii, Las Vegas, a Mediterranean cruise, the scene of your first date and that heinously expensive restaurant - these are legendary places to propose. And now you can add Nissan's Proving Grounds in Stanfield, Arizona to that list.

Nissan has put five members of its Facebook fan club into the 2013 Altima for "upgraded" test drives as part of a series called "The Altima Experience." One of those fans, Paul, wrote in to say that his girlfriend, Jane, loves the way the Altima drives, and Paul pledged to propose to her at the track if he got the chance to be one of the first to drive the new model.

The confetti and the string quartet didn't go to waste. To see how they got to that point, check out the video below.

Report: Volvo looking for partner in North America, seeks meaningful long-term relationship

Volvo grille badge closeup

Volvo is hoping to expand production into North America, and according to BusinessWeek, the Swedish automaker is currently on the search for a partnership here in the States. Ideally, this partnership would be with another manufacturer that Volvo would agree to share small car development costs with.

"In the medium term, five to six years, we need to find a proper solution in North America," Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby said in an interview with BusinessWeek. "Building a plant in ourselves is maybe more unlikely. I'm looking for a partner that could help us utilize a North American plant."

Volvo has reportedly been in talks with a "couple" of manufacturers and is "open to everybody," Jacoby stated, later specifically cited Fiat as a possible solution, since the Italian carmaker is already active in the United States through the Chrysler Group.

In the meantime, Volvo - like many automakers - is expanding its production in China. BusinessWeek reports that Volvo's first factory in Chengdu is "on track," and will start producing cars in the second half of 2013.

Video: 24 Hours of Le Mans is even cooler in high-def slo-mo

Le Mans in super slo-mo

We're not finished with the 24 Hours of Le Mans yet, and this could be the best of it: fifteen minutes of race action in super slow motion. You'll see a Corvette spitting flames and another dragging pieces, an Audi on three wheels, a Nissan on three tires, and how kerbs and G-forces put wear on suspensions and carbon-fiber tubs.

It's more uplifting than the crashes that were last week's news, but just as riveting. The video's posted below.

Auctions: First production 2013 SRT Viper nets $300,000 at Barrett-Jackson [w/video]

2013 SRT Viper GTS

It's become customary for automakers to offer up the first production example of collectible cars, so it was no surprise that SRT announced earlier this year that 2013 Viper GTS VIN #1 would be selling at Barrett-Jackson's Orange County auction. Adding to the auction's appeal, proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Austin Hatcher Foundation, an organization that helps children and families dealing with issues resulting from pediatric cancer.

With the Viper's 640 horsepower V10 and beautiful carbon fiber bodywork shining under the lights, bidding for the red snake rose quickly past the six figure sticker price to a quarter of a million dollars. At this point an SRT Track Experience and a trip to this year's Petit Le Mans were thrown in as a bonus to go with the car, but it couldn't entice any bidders to go much higher and the hammer fell at $300,000.

You can view our huge gallery of photos of the 2013 SRT Viper GTS at Barrett-Jackson above, watch a video of the auction below, or head over to the Austin Hatcher Foundation web site to make a donation of your own.

Hamstead Back On Top In Virginia

Round Seven of the iRacing.com V8 Supercars Series presented by BigPond took the teams to the community of Alton, near Danville, Virginia and Virginia International Raceway.  VIR, as it’s known, is a 5.26km track in length with 17 corners and is without a doubt one of the series’ most challenging tracks.  With acres of grass run-off areas bordering the pavement, there is no room for error as the slightest error is the ticket to a long agricultural adventure. With championship leader Madison Down a no show this week due to Internet issues, the grid was wide open.  Richard Hamstead took full advantage of the opportunity, claiming pole position by a single tenth of a second over Joshua Muggleton with Justin Ruggier just .007 behind Muggleton. BMW recalls X5, X6 over leaking power steering fluid

2013 BMW X6

Due to a potential manufacturing glitch, 2,642 examples of the 2012 and 2013 BMW X5 and 2013 BMW X6 are being recalled. The steering gear surface on said models might have been improperly machined, which could cause power steering fluid to leak onto the hot exhaust and cause a fire in the engine compartment.

BMW will begin notifying owners in July, at which time they can take their crossovers to dealers to repaired free of charge. Scroll down for a notice on the matter from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
