AJ Allmendinger celebrated his best Sprint Cup series to date, finishing second at Martinsville after surviving chaos in the closing laps. The Penske driver was in the shadows of his team-mate Brad Keselowski for most of the race at the half-mile track, but was able to avoid getting involved in the multi-car incident that unfolded after the penultimate restart, moving up from ninth all the way up to second. Having started his day ill, requiring a visit to the track's infield care center, Allmendinger drove a solid race and saw his persistence rewarded with his best ever finish in the Sprint Cup series.
